The Moon: I Should Be Dreaming (1968)

Look up tonight. See the moon? Big, eh? Closest it’s been to us for 20 years or so. Apparently.

Syd Barrett: No Good Trying (1969)

Syd recorded all his guitar and vocals alone, and handed the tapes to the rest of the musicians (including members of The Soft Machine) to add overdubs. However, he had a pretty unusual way of doing things, skipping and adding beats and bars, apparently at random. He also didn’t allow any rehearsals or let anything be re-recorded. A sure fire way of capturing mayhem, and the cause of the insane but amazing drumming on this track. He quit music altogether shortly afterwards to concentrate on art and gardening.

Maestro Fuzz-Tone
All you psych fans should be grateful to country picker Grady Martin who created the sound, or found it, when a malfunctioning channel on the mixing board caused superfuzz-distorto-mayhem in 1960. Nice one, Grady.

The Byrds classic line-up: David Crosby, Gene Clark, Michael Clarke, Chris Hillman, Roger McGuinn
I think they took this photo to mock Gene Clark’s fear of flying. I ain’t goin’ on no plane. Oh that reminds me, I’ve got an interesting fact about Roger McGuinn… he used to be called Jim. That’s not the interesting part, this is. He was a follower of Subud, one of those religion things where people believe in stuff that they make up. Anyways, the leader of Subud, the mysterious sounding Bapak (who undoubtedly had plans to take over the universe) asked Jim to pick a name beginning with the letter R, sending a list for Bapak to make the final selection. Being a Sci Fi and aviation nut, some of his suggestions were Rocket, Retro and Ramjet. Can’t find out what the others were, this damn inter net is rubbish. In the end Bapak picked the only ‘real’ name, used in radio speak. I think he missed out on a great opportunity to take the piss and call him Ramjet.

The Byrds: Change Is Now (1968)

A mess of country, psych and Krishna knows what; from the (almost) perfect Notorious Byrd Brothers record, a crumbling band going a bit nuts.

All Night Radio, or Dave Scher and Jimi Hey, or half of Beachwood Sparks
Be careful kids, a combination of country music and magic mushrooms are all it takes to end up like these losers dudes.

All Night Radio: You’ll Be On Your Own (2004)

The record this belongs to, Spirit Stereo Frequency, is absolutely nuts. Highly recommended. There’s a little more about them at their Sub Pop page if you’re foolish enough.
